Getting to Know Laura from Savvy Peacocks

interviews Jul 26, 2021

We sat down with the lovely Laura from Savvy Peacocks to give you some insight into her fantastic business, how she got started, and what’s next!

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Laura Weston! I run a financial coaching business called Savvy Peacocks. I help and support entrepreneurial parents to become more financially savvy in their business and in their personal life, so they can hand that down to future generations. I hope to increase financial literacy across the UK, which is currently fairly low at 67% across the UK, which I think should be higher!

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Motivating, Upfront and open (if that can be classed as one word), and I think Bubbly is the right word. What I’m trying to say is that I’m friendly and conversational, and I tend to be enthusiastic over the littlest thing; I’m a very positive person! I’d say Bubbly covers that!

What is the main motivation behind Savvy Peacocks?

The main motivation is to increase financial literacy and to help support parents with how they teach children about money. I believe that lessons like these should come from the parents – money management is a life skill that we as parents need to teach our children.

How did you get started?

I worked in retail banking for 20 years, and when the time came to move on to the next chapter of my life and start a business, I thought on what I am most passionate about, but also what can I deliver quite easily based on all my experience. I'm a parent myself, so I know what it's like as a parent, with everything that we have to balance and all the plates we’re spinning. At the same time I don’t think financial education is talked about in schools as it isn’t necessarily classed as a life skill. That's what I want to change; that mindset around financially educating children. I believe it is actually a life skill that will help them far more than some of the other life skills that we might teach as parents. Most parents will prioritise teaching their children to swim or to ride a bike, but actually the amount of adults actually riding a bike or swimming is slim. Yes, they’re skills, but I believe that teaching them about money and financially educating them is something that we use everyday and it's important that you teach them now whilst they’re young so that they can avoid bad mistakes as they go into adulthood. I’m glad to help give them the best start in life!

What’s your number one tip for money management?

I don't necessarily believe in a strict budget and depriving yourself of things when you're saving up for a certain goal that you may have in mind. I believe in having everything in moderation. Similar to a diet, really; diets don't work if you starve yourself and deprive yourself of certain things. It's OK to have a little bit of everything as long as it's in moderation and I think that's the same with your money. It’s important to spend money on yourself and enjoy yourself just the same as it is to work towards goals that you may be saving up for. I believe in having a balanced approach to all the different relationships we can have with money, and not just being super strict because we think that will get us to a quick short-term goal. I like to think on a much bigger scale - more for longevity!

What do you like to do when you’re not hard at work?

I've got three children that are only 6, 4, and 3, so they are my whole life when I'm not working. They’re still very demanding at that age still so I’m with them when I'm not working. In the evenings, I'm socialising with friends and trying to have some me time.

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Can I say two? My first one is my nan. She was a massive part of my life before she passed in 2013 and my children are all named after her for different reasons and she was a big part of my life. I would love to have some time with her again. But, if it was a famous choice it has to be someone like Michael Jackson! I think he’s such a legend! Everything that he did in his life and his whole journey… I could just sit and talk to him for hours, I'm sure!

Laura is opening up her books to take on some 1-2-1 clients in September! She’s offering for clients to work with her over a three month period, and will be deep diving into all aspects of their finances whether that be business or personal.
